In Detail

Mold can form due to spilled drinks, excessive moisture from a leaky car seal, sunroof, or a window or door left open during rain.

If  your vehicle has moisture of any kind it is almost certain that you have mold problem. Just because you don't see it, it doesn't mean you are safe.

Mold is insidious. It finds it's way to every part of your vehicle interior including your seat belts, under the seats, in and underneath your carpet, behind the dashboard, and in your air circulation system. I will be sure to treat, remove and clean that hidden mold too.

When car mold is in an 'active state' it creates a musty odor. Dormant mold is just waiting for moisture levels to rise ever so slightly, and then ka-bloom, it blooms and spreads like pollen throughout your car (and lungs).

We treat the all the deeply embedded mold, removing carpet on particularly difficult jobs.

We will do our best to identify where the moisture is leaking into your car, so you can direct the repairman.

We also use ozone to kill mold spores. If, after cleaning, and for good measure, there are any remaining spores, our Ozone finds and kills them.

Ozone kills mold, mildew, bacteria, and viruses including COVID -19.

Our Preliminary Car Mold Removal Steps

I'll first fill your vehicle with ozone gas, which kills all spores. This process takes 2-3 hours.

I'll then remove all seats (front & rear), trim, and affected floor mats and of my customer's personal items (to remove all lingering spores from these surfaces) from the car to check for remaining moisture in your carpet.

Our Initial Interior Drying Process

If water is discovered in the carpets of the driver or passenger side, I begin my initial water extraction to remove as much water as I can. I then lift and prop up driver and passenger side carpets. High powered fans are used, along with a space heater to facilitate drying. This process, depending on moisture levels can take 12-24 hours and occasionally two days. I am busy during this process as i constantly monitor moisture levels and move drying equipment around accordingly.

As your vehicle is drying, I work to clean and eliminate mold from your seats, floor mats, and trim.

Our Water Leak Tests

Once dry, I then perform a series of water tests to locate the source of the leak. It does no good to treat and remove mould if there remains an active leak in you vehicle, as mold will return very quickly.

After my water tests,  I am usually able to identify two or more possible leak sources that the customer can instruct their mechanic to fix once my detail is completed.

Mold Treatment & Car Detailing

I begin with the trunk, doors, door jambs, windows, dash, center console, steering column, windshield, and carpets.

Ventilation System Inspection

I use a camera probe to visually inspect floor and dash vent passageways for mold spores and if I see them I clean the entire ventilation system. Your cabin air filter will be contaminated and will be replaced with a fresh new filter.

Automotive air conditioning

Automotive air conditioning systems use air conditioning to cool the air in a vehicle.

Maintenance, hygiene & cleaning

[edit]

Refrigerant Maintenance

Air conditioning systems in cars require special maintenance. Normally the lifetime losses of refrigerant are small and have no effect. But the system should be checked for any loss in a two to four year circle; at least, when the cooling capacity decreases.

Hygiene control

Biogrowth in air conditioning systems can be reduced for a limited time only. Hygiene measures should be applied regularly. The Standard 6032 of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) provides an overview of the hygienic maintenance of vehicle air conditioning systems according to the state of the art. A regular, professional hygiene check of a vehicle's air conditioning system includes checking the drain lines for the condensation water, annual cleaning of the air conditioning system evaporator and changing the interior air filter (pollen filter). In particular, the unhindered drainage of the condensation water from the air conditioning system evaporator must be ensured, otherwise the moisture will remain within the system and uncontrolled nests for biological colonization will arise.[44]

Due to the physical framework conditions, the forced separation of condensed water, air conditioning evaporators in motor vehicles have a very important health and hygiene function. Regular cleaning of the air conditioning evaporator must therefore ensure that the biological colonization of the surface is interrupted and that the sometimes toxic decay products of bacteria (endotoxins) or metabolites of mold (mycotoxins) are safely removed from the lamella system.

Hygienic air conditioning cleanin

The necessity of hygienic cleaning of ventilation systems in vehicles at regular intervals is not only logically understandable, but is also described by the technical guideline and standard VDI 6032 of the Association of German Engineers. Particles such as Dust, (animal) hair and/or fungal growth, dander, etc. and remain on the pollen filter shaft and the surrounding walls. The air conditioner quickly becomes a dirt and germ spinner. Merely replacing the air filter of an HVAC system as part of the inspection is not enough. The pollen filter box must be cleaned professionally and the air conditioning system evaporator must be flushed hygienically and effectively with cleaners without fragrances (allergy triggers) every 24 months at the latest. With a professional air conditioning system cleaning according to the current state of the art, mould, germs, bacteria and other odor-forming substances or deposits are literally washed away at the point of origin. This is the only way to ensure the required indoor air hygiene in the vehicle. The choice of approved cleaning agents and methods is also crucial here. These were also clearly described by the VDI in the 6032 standard for cleaning air conditioning systems. With this method, the air conditioning evaporator is completely flushed with a cleaning liquid introduced through a probe.[45] The evaporator is then as clean as a new component and completely free of deposits or substances that form a culture medium. Only the combination of mechanical cleaning and a cleaning agent ensures working results. Meanwhile, both the driver and all passengers are exposed to an invisible health risk. "In order to achieve a supply air quality that is conducive to health, the AC system must be .. professionally .. cleaned at regular intervals.“

Additional Information

Mold removal in cars is a crucial task that ensures the health and cleanliness of your vehicle. Mold, a type of fungus, thrives in moist environments and can easily accumulate in cars, especially in areas like the upholstery, carpets, and air conditioning systems. Exposure to mold can cause allergic reactions and respiratory issues, making it essential to address the problem promptly.

The process begins with identifying the source of moisture, which could be from spills, leaks, or condensation. Addressing this root cause is critical to preventing mold from recurring. After fixing the moisture issue, a thorough cleaning is necessary. This involves vacuuming and shampooing the carpets and upholstery to remove mold spores. For non-porous surfaces, a mixture of water and vinegar or a specialized mold removal product can be effective. It's crucial to ensure all areas are completely dry afterward to avoid mold regrowth.

In cases of severe mold infestations, professional cleaning services might be required. These services use industrial-grade products and equipment to eradicate mold, ensuring a deeper and more lasting clean.

Regular maintenance, like keeping the interior dry, using air conditioning wisely, and cleaning spills immediately, can prevent mold formation. By taking these steps, you can maintain a healthy and mold-free environment inside your car.
